Legal tint costs the same
The darkness of the rear film does not change the price much; the film tier does. A legal install also saves you from paying twice to strip illegal film after a ticket. Full rules, window by window, are in our California window tint law guide.
Ceramic, carbon or dyed
Dyed film is the cheapest and mostly darkens the glass. Carbon film blocks more heat and holds its color better. Ceramic film rejects the most heat for its shade, blocks UV and has no metal in it, so it does not interfere with phone, GPS or keyless signals. In Southeast LA summers, the difference shows up on the steering wheel and the seats.
What changes the price
The number and size of the windows, a big rear glass or a panoramic roof, curved glass that needs heat shrinking, and whether old film has to be removed first. Removing old, baked-on tint and its glue is careful work, especially around rear defroster lines.
