What is legal in California?

Any shade on the rear side windows and back glass if the car has mirrors on both sides; clear film only on the front side windows. We will not install illegal tint. Full rules, window by window, are in our California window tint law guide.

Why ceramic

Ceramic films reject heat without metal in them, so there is no signal interference and the film stays neutral in color. In Southeast LA summers, the difference shows up on the steering wheel and the seats.

Window tint prices: what changes the number

Tint price depends on how many windows you do, the film and the glass. A coupe has less glass than a three-row SUV, and big curved rear windows take more time to shape. Ceramic film costs more than basic dyed film because it blocks more heat. Removing old tint adds work, because the glue has to come off too, and the back window has defroster lines that need care. A windshield top strip or a sunroof adds to the job. Send the year, make and model and which windows you want, and we will price it.

How we tint, step by step

The glass is cleaned inside and out, including the edges under the seals. Film for each window is cut to the glass. On curved windows, the film is laid on the outside and shaped with heat until it matches the curve, then moved to the inside, where it stays. It goes on with a slip solution and is squeegeed down. We check every window in good light before you pick up. For the next few days you may see a slight haze or small water pockets. That is normal while the film dries, and it clears on its own.

Factory privacy glass vs ceramic tint

Many SUVs, trucks and minivans come with dark rear glass from the factory. That privacy glass is tinted in the glass itself. It cuts light, but it does much less against heat than most people expect. Ceramic film on top of it is what cuts the heat, and on a summer afternoon in Whittier, Downey or Norwalk your rear passengers feel the difference. On the front side windows, where California only allows clear film, a clear film still blocks UV without making the glass darker.

Caring for tinted windows

Clean tinted glass with an ammonia-free cleaner and a soft microfiber cloth. Ammonia and rough pads can cloud or scratch the film over time. Never use a razor or scraper on the inside of tinted glass, and watch rings, keys and seat belt buckles near the rear side windows. The rear defroster works normally with film on it. If an edge lifts or a bubble does not clear after the first couple of weeks, text us a photo. Old, cheap tint that has turned purple or bubbled can be removed and replaced with ceramic film.
