Toyota Tacoma chrome delete, wraps, PPF and tint
Tacoma owners usually want the bright pieces gone first: the grille, the bumper, the handles and the badges. Others want a new color, clear film against trail scratches, or ceramic tint for a cooler cab. How much chrome your truck has depends on the trim and the year, so send a few photos and we price exactly what is on it.
Chrome delete depends on the trim
Tacomas leave the factory with very different amounts of bright trim. Some trims are mostly black or body color already, while others may carry a bright grille surround, chrome door handles, mirror caps or a chrome rear bumper. The 2024 redesign changed the whole front end, so pieces on a 2016 to 2023 truck do not match a newer one. The grille is plastic and takes film well when its surface is smooth; tight mesh inserts take longer. A steel rear bumper can be wrapped, or powder coated if you want a permanent finish, and silver wheels can be powder coated black in the same visit.
Wrapping a Tacoma: flat panels and textured plastic
The doors and bed sides are wide, fairly flat panels. Film lays down well on them, but gloss shows every ripple in the light, which is one reason satin and matte are popular on trucks. The textured black plastic is a different story. Flares, cladding and lower bumper pieces on many trucks have a grained surface, and film only touches the high points of the grain, so it holds poorly and can lift in heat. We usually leave those parts black, which suits most color changes anyway. If your trim has a hood scoop, it adds a little time to the hood.
PPF against rocks and trail brush
A Tacoma that sees dirt roads gets hit from below and from the side. Stones from the front tires sandblast the rockers and the bottom of the doors, and the lower bed sides around the rear wheels take what both sets of tires throw. On narrow trails, branches drag along the doors and leave long, fine scratches. Clear PPF on the lower doors, rockers and bed sides takes that abuse, and light marks in the film fade with heat. Up front, the bumper, the leading edge of the hood, the headlights and the mirrors take the freeway chips. Matte PPF does the same job with a satin look.
Tint and the rear window
Ceramic tint keeps a Tacoma cab cooler after a day parked in the sun, and it blocks the UV that fades a dash. In California the rear side windows and the back glass can be as dark as you like, since the truck has a mirror on each side. The front door windows must pass 70% of light, so clear film is the only legal option there, and the windshield is limited to a strip at the top. If your truck has a sliding rear window, the film is cut to fit the fixed and sliding panes separately, so the slider still opens and closes cleanly.
What sets the price, and the visit
Cab style and bed length come first, since they set how much film the truck needs. Then the trim, because the number of bright pieces sets the size of a chrome delete, and then the film you pick. Textured parts left black save time; wrapped door jambs add it. The truck is washed and decontaminated, the film goes on indoors, and the edges are post-heated before you pick it up. After a trail day, rinse the mud off soon, hand wash with a pH-neutral soap and keep a pressure washer tip well back from film edges.
Questions
How much is a Tacoma chrome delete?
That depends on how many bright pieces your trim has. A truck with only badges and a grille surround is a small job; one with chrome handles, mirror caps and a rear bumper takes longer. Send photos of the front, both sides and the tailgate, and we quote each piece.
Can you wrap the textured black plastic on my Tacoma?
Usually we do not, and we tell you why before you book. Film grips the peaks of the grain and not the valleys, so it can lift on hot days. Most owners leave textured parts black, which looks right with almost any wrap color.
Will PPF stop trail scratches on my Tacoma?
It stops most of them. Branch scrapes and light scuffs stay in the film instead of the paint, and fine marks fade with warmth from the sun or a heat gun. A hard hit from a rock can still cut the film, but the film takes that hit before the paint does.
How dark can I tint a Tacoma in California?
Behind the driver, any shade you want: the rear side windows and the back glass have no darkness limit when both outside mirrors are in place. The front door windows must stay at 70% light, which means clear film only, and the windshield can have a top strip.
